FRONT BRAKE RINGING NOISE
PURPOSE
Customers may complain of a high-pitched ringing noise from the front brakes during light brake application at low speeds (such as driving in a parking lot), and on turns after the brakes are warm.
This bulletin describes how to determine whether new, improved front brake caliper supports will eliminate the noise.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
2001-2003 Galant, Eclipse, and Eclipse Spyder models equipped with V6 engine built before 7/23/02
2002-2003 Galant, Eclipse, and Eclipse Spyder models equipped with 4-cylinder engine built before 7/23/02
PROCEDURE
- Test drive the vehicle to confirm.the noise. Apply the brake several times. After the rotors are warm lightly apply the brakes while driving between 5 – 35 mph. If the noise is similar to the sound of a rotor being turned on a brake lathe, replace both front brake caliper supports with the new, improved parts listed in the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin as follows:
- Remove the front wheel and tire assembly.
- Remove the front brake caliper support bolts. Separate the brake caliper and set or hang it aside. Be careful not to stretch or twist the brake hose.
- Remove the caliper support from the front knuckle assembly and replace with the improved parts listed in the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin.
- Reassemble the caliper to the support. Apply brake-specific grease (such as Permatex Ultra Disc Brake Caliper Lube or equivalent) to the caliper pins and caliper support pin bores.
After reassembly, be sure that the pin boots are attached securely in the proper position. - Repeat Steps 2 through 5 on the other side of the vehicle.
- Test drive the vehicle to verify proper brake operation and confirm that the noise has been eliminated.
