NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V458
Component(s): SUSPENSION
Potential Number of Units Affected: 174,382

Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.

SUMMARY:

Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain model year 2002-2007 Lancer, 2004 Lancer Wagon, 2003-2006 Lancer Evolution, 2003-2006 Outlander and 2007-2013 Outlander V-6 vehicles originally sold in, or ever registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia.

In the affected vehicles, the front lower control arms may detach due to the front cross member corroding from salt water exposure such as from road salt use.

CONSEQUENCE:

A detached front control arm can result in the loss of control of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

REMEDY:

MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the front cross members.

Depending on the level of existing corrosion, either a sealing/anti-corrosion agent will be applied or the front cross member will be replaced with a new one that has a sealing/anti-corrosion agent applied to it.

These repairs will be performed free of charge.

The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule.

Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820.

MMNA’s number for this recall is SR-16-003.

NOTES:

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

SUBJECT:

CROSS MEMBER CORROSION – SAFETY RECALL CAMPAIGN

No: SR-16-003
DATE: August, 2016
MODEL: SEE BELOW

PURPOSE

This bulletin provides directions for inspection and repair of affected vehicles’ cross members.

BACKGROUND

The inside and outside surfaces of the front cross members used on certain vehicles, if exposed long term to snow melt water and anti-freezing agents, may corrode due to insufficient performance of the rust protection. Should significant corrosion occur over time, a lower control arm could eventually become detached resulting in loss of vehicle control and a potential collision.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

2002-2007 Lancer*, Lancer Wagon*, Lancer Evolution*

2003-2006 Outlander*

2007-2013 V6 Outlander*

*Currently or ever registered in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Washington D.C.

SR-16-003

NOTE: If you encounter a vehicle which has excessive cross member corrosion, but is not covered under this campaign (i.e., never registered in a salt belt state), contact your DPSM for further directions.

LABOR AND PARTS

Labor:

There are only 2 possible repair scenarios for this campaign.

Scenario 1
Inspect = OK – then still must apply the 2 anti-rust agents only.

Scenario 2
Inspect = applicable corrosion – then replace cross member and specified related specified parts and apply the 2 anti-rust agents.

Parts:

Both scenarios require the application of the 2 anti-rust agents.

Only Scenario 2, requires the replacement of the cross member and specified related parts.

Each can of the anti-rust agents is enough to do 5 vehicles. Thus, the dealer net price for each of the materials is priced at dealer net divided by 5 and will be reflected automatically when entering the parts costs on the related recall campaign claim. Dealers will receive markup based on the per vehicle material prices.

RENTAL CARS:

If there is a need to provide the owner with a rental car or to claim return freight charges, claim the applicable charges in this section of the claim on the lower portion of the labor entry screen.

RENTAL CARS

REPLACED PARTS:

Replaced parts must be held for at least 10 days beyond the recall claim payment date unless requested to be returned to MMNA. Return requested parts as you would any return requested warranty replaced part.
