July 28, 2016 NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 16V563000
Vehicle Hesitation when Accelerating
A hesitation during acceleration can increase the risk of a crash.
NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V563
Manufacturer Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.
Components POWER TRAIN
Potential Number of Units Affected 82,436
Summary
Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 Outlander Sport vehicles and 2016 Outlander and Lancer vehicles. The affected vehicles are equipped with a constant velocity transmission (CVT) that, in certain driving conditions, may cause a delay in the vehicle accelerating.
Remedy
MMNA has notified owners, and dealers will reprogram the CVT control unit with modified software, free of charge. The recall began on August 15, 2016. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA’s number for this recall is SR-16-006.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
Check if your Mitsubishi has a Recall
PURPOSE
During initial acceleration from a standstill, or when accelerating again after either constant speed operation or coasting down, affected CVT equipped vehicles may experience a hesitation if the range switch momentarily experiences a loss of signal.
This Safety Recall Bulletin provides instructions for reprogramming the CVT-ECU with a modified software. The modified software ignores the momentary loss of the range switch signal.
BACKGROUND
When the range switch momentarily experiences a loss of signal, the CVT-ECU believes that the driver has manually shifted the selector from neutral (N) to drive (D) while the throttle is open. In response, the CVT-ECU instructs the engine ECU to reduce its torque output to prevent “shift shock” and slippage of the CVT metal belt. This reduction in engine torque can directly affect vehicle acceleration and would be perceived by the driver as vehicle hesitation.
AFFECTED VEHICLES

J2534 Reprogramming - Mitsubishi
Introduction
Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. offers J2534-1 Powertrain Control Module (PCM) re-flash capability in accordance with CARB & EPA regulations. Mitsubishi Motors vehicles use re-flashable PCMs starting with the 1998 model year. Before attempting a re-flash of a Mitsubishi PCM, you must obtain a validated J2534-1 pass-thru device. In addition, you must only re-flash a Mitsubishi PCM when a specific Mitsubishi Motors Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) calls for it. All TSBs are available in the Service Information portion of this website. In some cases, re-flash procedures are accompanied by replacement of parts or other related procedures. Failure to follow these guidelines may result in an unsatisfactory repair.
What is J2534-1?
J2534-1 is a Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) standard that enables the use of a J2534-1 pass-thru device (available through Special Tool Manufacturers) and a personal computer to re-program a PCM with updated instructions, as well as perform other procedures on some PCMs.
There are two distinct families of PCMs, based on the communication protocol used for re-flashing. Each family of PCMs requires a specific software solution available on this website as follows:
- Legacy PCMs Refer to (Reprogramming System Identification Chart) for details (ISO9141) protocol for re-flash communication. A software application, Update Manager, is required to re-flash this type of PCM. Update Manager consists of 2 parts, Update Manager A & Update Manager B. Use Update Manager A to determine the current PCM instruction level (current flash level), known as ROM-ID. Then use Update Manager B to re-flash the PCM with re-flash files and other support files downloaded from this website. If installed for the first time, some K-Line PCM's require additional initialization procedures - for example, Immobilizer Key Code Transfer. To perform these initialization procedures, a MUT-III Special tool must be used. Please refer to the "Special Tool" section of this webpage for details.
- The latest technology PCMs Refer to (Reprogramming System Identification Chart) use CAN protocol for re-flash communication. In addition, some CAN-based PCMs require additional initialization procedures if installed in a vehicle for the first time, such as VIN writing, Variant Coding (programming specific vehicle attributes) and Immobilizer Key Code Transfer. All procedures are done using the MUT3-SE CAN Passthru application available for download from this website. Use MUT3-SE CAN Passthru to obtain the PCM Part number, VIN stored in the PCM (necessary before any other procedures). Then download additional software components and support files through MCDS Server to enable the MUT3-SE CAN Pass-Thru application to perform other procedures as needed.

Re: Customer Satisfaction Campaign SC-15-003
Dear FIRSTNAME LASTNAME,
Mitsubishi Motors strives to build vehicles with the highest level of quality, and continuously improve that quality with every vehicle built. To help assure continued satisfaction with your Mitsubishi vehicle, we are urging that the following product improvement be performed, as soon as possible. Failure to have this campaign timely completed may result in damage to your vehicle’s transmission.
Our records indicate that you have not yet responded to previous notification letters for Customer Satisfaction Campaign SC-15-003 and Safety Recall Campaign SR-16-006. Please do so immediately.
Recommended Product Improvement:
Certain vehicles with CVT-8 transmissions may exhibit a shudder condition at low speeds (10 – 40 mph), or a surge/flare of engine rpm at higher speeds. This may be caused by a malfunctioning of the CVT’s hydraulic pressure control software. In the worst case scenario, with continued driving under these conditions, the CVT belt may become damaged, causing a warning light to come on. Continued operation under these conditions can eventually cause damage to your vehicle’s transmission. A CVT-ECU update is available to address this potential software malfunction.
What your dealer will do:
Your local Mitsubishi dealer will reprogram the CVT-ECU; this repair will take from 0.3 to 0.6 hours to complete. In extreme cases, the transmission may need to be replaced; this repair will take approximately 6.8 to 8.2 hours. However, the dealer may need your vehicle for a longer period of time. Every effort will be made to minimize your inconvenience.
What you should do:
Please contact your local Mitsubishi dealership to schedule an appointment to complete Customer Satisfaction Campaign SC-15-003 and Safety Recall Campaign SR-16-006. The CVT-ECU reprogramming that your Mitsubishi dealership will perform satisfies the requisites of both Customer Service Campaign SC-15-003 and Safety Recall Campaign SR-16-006. Although not required, it is recommended to bring this letter when you take your vehicle into the dealership.
If you have any questions regarding this customer satisfaction campaign, please contact us:
Mitsubishi Customer Relations Department
P.O. Box 6400
Cypress, CA 90630-0064
Phone 1-888-648-7820

Re: Customer Satisfaction Campaign SC-15-004
Dear FIRSTNAME LASTNAME,
Mitsubishi Motors strives to build vehicles with the highest level of quality, and continuously improve that quality with every vehicle built. To help assure continued satisfaction with your Mitsubishi vehicle, we are urging that the following product improvement be performed, as soon as possible. Failure to have this campaign timely completed may result in damage to your vehicle’s transmission.
Our records indicate that you have not yet responded to previous notification letters for Customer Satisfaction Campaign SC-15-004 and Safety Recall Campaign SR-16-006.
In extreme cases, the transmission may need to be replaced; this repair will take approximately 6.8 to 8.8 hours. However, the dealer may need your vehicle for a longer period of time. Every effort will be made to minimize your inconvenience.
What you should do:
Please contact your local Mitsubishi dealership to schedule an appointment to complete Customer Satisfaction Campaign SC-15-004 and Safety Recall Campaign SR-16-006. The CVT-ECU reprogramming that your Mitsubishi dealership will perform satisfies the requisites of both Customer Service Campaign SC-15-004 and Safety Recall Campaign SR-16-006. Although not required, it is recommended to bring this letter when you take your vehicle into the dealership.
If you have any questions regarding this customer satisfaction campaign, please contact us:

Cypress, CA 90630-0064
Phone 1-888-648-7820

Dear FIRSTNAME LASTNAME,
This notice has been sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
Reason for notice: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2015-2016 Outlander Sport, and 2016 Outlander and Lancer vehicles. During initial acceleration from a standstill, or when accelerating again after either constant speed operation or coasting down, affected CVT equipped vehicles may experience a hesitation if the range switch momentarily experiences a loss of signal. If the range switch momentarily experiences a loss of signal, this may result in reduced vehicle acceleration. Unexpected reduction in available acceleration during every day driving, such as acceleration from a stop, merging on to a freeway, or turning left against traffic, could result in an increased risk of an accident.
What you should do: Please contact your local Authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer and schedule an appointment to have the recall remedy performed on your vehicle. When you bring your vehicle in, please show the dealer this letter. (If you misplace this letter, the dealer will still perform this inspection/repair to your vehicle, free of charge.)
What your dealer will do: The dealership will reprogram the CVT-ECU with a modified software.
How long will it take? The time needed for the inspection is approximately 0.5 hr. The dealer may need your vehicle for a longer period of time due to service scheduling issues, but every effort will be made to minimize your inconvenience.
If you experience any problem having your vehicle repaired promptly and/or at no charge, please inform us by calling the Mitsubishi Customer Relations Department at 888-648-7820. Hours: Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Pacific Time).

Dear FIRSTNAME LASTNAME,
This notice has been sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
Reason for notice: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) has decided that defects which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2015 Outlander Sport vehicles.
(1) The hose clamp(s) used on the continuously variable transmission (CVT) fluid hoses may not have been “released” on some vehicles during the vehicle assembly line process. These hose clamp(s), if left in the open position, may not properly secure the hose end to the fitting and the hose could become disconnected from the fitting during vehicle operation. If this occurs, transmission fluid will leak out of the disconnected hose and may result in loss of drive train power and the vehicle could become inoperable. While the subject transmission hoses are not located adjacent to the exhaust manifold or the battery, transmission fluid in the presence of an ignition source can also present a fire hazard.
(2) During initial acceleration from a standstill, or when accelerating again after either constant speed operation or coasting down, affected CVT equipped vehicles may experience a hesitation if the range switch momentarily experiences a loss of signal. When checking for applicability of SC-15-003 (C1512Z) and SR-16-006 (C1606Z), please check for and complete any other open campaigns. Always get the customer’s approval before completing a campaign on a customer owned vehicle.
IMPORTANT
To maximize customer satisfaction with the quality of their vehicle, affected new or used inventory vehicles should be remedied before the vehicle is delivered. Dealers must check their inventory vehicles’ VINs on the Warranty Superscreen to verify whether the vehicle is involved in this service campaign.
IMPORTANT
Affected new or used inventory vehicles must be repaired before the vehicle is delivered. Dealers must check their inventory vehicles’ VINs on the Warranty Superscreen to verify whether the vehicle is involved in a recall campaign. It is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to deliver a new motor vehicle or any new or used item of motor vehicle equipment (including a tire) covered by the notification under a sale or lease until the defect or noncompliance is remedied.
